House Color Scheme

Struggling to envision a finished room in your home? When it comes to interior design, we’re the experts. We’ve got some tips to help you nail down a house color scheme that you’ll love!

  1. Start with Neutrals

Neutrals are a great way to begin when it comes to designing your home. Having a neutral base can allow you to change accents over the years, add or take away smaller elements without having to repaint or re-carpet your entire home. Neutrals, colors which have very low saturation (generally black, brown, tan, gold, white, ivory, silver, and gray) can be paired with anything or just with each other, and you can’t go wrong! If this sounds too boring to you, consider adding patterns and textures in with your neutrals. It will instantly make the space more exciting.

  1. Use Warm and Cool

Warm colors (think reds, oranges and yellows) can make a room feel cozier. Cool colors (blues, greens and purples) are associated with peacefulness or energy when used in brighter hues. While you may be tempted to stick with just one side of the color wheel, using both warm and cool tones in a room can actually really balance out the space and keep it from feeling either too closed in and muted or too cold and stiff. Complimentary colors can really help to create contrast. For example, if you love blues and grays, try adding a pop of yellow or orange to add some warmth.

  1. Follow the Rule of 3

Although there is no set formula when designing a house, there are basic guidelines that can help your home look more natural and put together. A good starting point is the Rule of 3: Three colors, that is. These three colors should be rationed out roughly into 60 percent of the room as the main color, 30 percent as the secondary color, and 10 percent as the accent color. You can apply the Rule of 3 to colors, textures, types of lighting or even just little decorations sitting on your coffee table.

  1. Don’t Be Afraid of Gray

Gray is a fabulous and trendy neutral that can go with anything! Depending on what it is paired with, gray can lean either warm or cool. Use darker grays towards the bottom of the room, lighter ones at the top. Add in pops of gold, a shade of blue or even a bright pink, depending on your personality!
